New Toyota 2019 Highlander for Sale in Smithfield, RI
The Toyota Highlander is a mid-sized crossover with 8 inches of ground clearance that can seat up to eight. The regular gas-burning 2019 Highland comes in five trims – LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, and Limited; a hybrid version is also available. A 2.7-liter four cylinder is the base engine, with a 3.5-liter V6 upgrade available. They’re both paired with an eight-speed manu-matic (automatic with clutchless manual mode) transmission. Fuel efficiency is very close across the trims, averaging about 20 mpg city/26 highway.
The standard equipment on every trim is highlighted by the Toyota Safety Sense package of active safety features. Other amenities found on all trims are a rear spoiler, LED fog lights and taillights, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The top-tier Platinum Package adds a panoramic moonroof, onboard hands-free communication, and heated rear seats. Toyota offers several wheel options, as well as nine paint colors and four interior color choices (saddle brown perforated leather is only offered on the Limited Platinum). Depending on the trim, the upholstery might be cloth, synthetic leather, or perforated real leather; the Limited and Limited Platinum trims have heated and ventilated front-row seats.
Safety and Technology
Standard on all trims is the excellent Toyota Safety Sense system, highlighted by adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, and pre-collision alert with pedestrian detection. Rear parking assist sonar, a blind-spot monitor with rear-cross traffic alert, and a bird’s-eye view camera with perimeter scan are standard on the highest trim.
For entertainment and information management, the standard Entune multimedia system puts smartphone use, music, traffic, and more all in one place, controlled on a hi-res touch-screen (6.1 inches on the LE and 8 inches on the rest of the trims). Toyota still also includes a CD player, an element that’s now difficult to find anymore in new cars. Navigation comes standard starting with the XLE trim. The available Smart Key technology automatically unlocks the doors, including the liftgate, and turns on the cabin lights as the driver approaches with the key tucked away in pocket or purse. The available Driver Easy Speak feature allows front-seat occupants to talk PA-style using the Entune system and the vehicle’s speakers. There are plenty of USB ports for all, and a rear-seat entertainment system is available.
Comfort and Utility
As with all Toyotas, a lot of thought went into the Highlander’s design. As a couple of examples, the suspension was located under the cargo area to save space, and the floor is filled with sound-absorbing insulation to limit road noise. There’s abundant space for everyone and their stuff, with class-leading headroom and legroom and some clever hidden storage areas all around, including a full-width shelf integrated with the dash. Rear-seat passengers get their own climate control and USB charging ports (two on each side), plus one standard household-type ac outlet. The second row can be either the standard three-person bench or two captain’s chairs; the third-row bench is easy to access with the second row’s sliding seats quickly moved out of the way. There are three zones of climate control.
Four-cylinder Highlanders can tow up to 1,500 pounds, while the six-cylinder models can tow 5,000 pounds. Factory roof-rack cross bars can be added for carrying recreational equipment, extra cargo, materials for home improvement, and so on.
