GR86
“No more boring cars.” This statement, famously attributed to Toyota’s longtime president Akio Toyoda, reflects the philosophy behind every vehicle bearing the Gazoo Racing (GR) badge. As a seasoned motorsports veteran and driving expert, Akio personally test-drove each model to ensure that its performance and ride quality were perfected. But how does Toyota determine when a GR vehicle is ready for the road? These cars are tested on some of the world’s most challenging proving grounds, including the Dakar Rally, Nürburgring 24 Hours, the World Rally Championship, and the World Endurance Championship. The GR nameplate has not only competed but also triumphed in these prestigious races, and that now brings some extra thrills to daily driving – while turning heads along the way.
As a sports car known for its exceptional performance, the GR86 lineup continues to raise the bar with a few enhancements for 2025. Updates to the shock absorbers, electric power steering, and throttle mapping deliver smoother upshifting and downshifting, as well as faster acceleration from a standstill. Toyota has also brought back the GR86 Hakone Edition, which pays homage to Japan’s legendary turnpike of the same name. This style-focused trim features 18-inch bronze wheels, an exclusive Ridge Green exterior, and a refined cabin with upscale materials and tan contrast stitching.

This sports car gets off the line in 3 trim levels: the GR86, the GR86 Premium, and GR86 Hakone Edition. Each has a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated, 4-cylinder boxer-four mated to a 6-speed manual transmission; a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with Dynamic Rev Management and paddle shifters is optional. The ‘25 GR86 powertrain generates 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. It has a top speed of 140 mph and can go from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. According to the EPA’s official fuel economy findings, all three trims return 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.
Every ‘25 GR86 has a rear-wheel drivetrain, a Torsen limited-slip differential, and vehicle stability control with Track Mode, a setting that can enhance braking, increase the slip angle, and optimize the throttle response—among other benefits. The framework for the base GR86 and the GR86 Premium is a MacPherson strut front suspension with a stabilizer bar, a multilink rear suspension with a member-mounted stabilizer bar, and GR circuit-tuned shock absorbers, iron front knuckles, and coil springs. The GR86 Hakone Edition upgrades to SACHS dampers on the front and rear suspensions and swaps out the standard braking system for high-performance Brembo brakes.

The entry-level GR86 has Michelin Primacy HP summer tires on 17-inch machined-finish alloy wheels, a tire pressure monitor, a black matrix grille with G-mesh inserts and functional air inlet ducts, front-wheel-arch air outlet vents, heated power side mirrors, remote keyless entry, dual chrome-tipped exhaust, and LED exterior lighting, including auto-leveling projector-style headlights. The cabin features front bucket seats with black side bolsters and fabric inserts, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, two USB charging ports with an auxiliary port, a one-piece folding rear seatback, and leather trim atop the gearshift boot, shift lever/knob, and parking brake handle.

Advanced Safety Tech
The GR86 Active Safety Suite is a standard package of advanced safety features and driver-assistive technologies. All trims equipped with the manual gearbox have automatic high beams, lane departure alert with sway warning, adaptive cruise control, and lead vehicle start alert. With the available automatic transmission (AT), a pre-collision braking system with throttle management is added. The two higher trims (AT only) also get blind-spot detection. Rear parking sonar with reverse automatic braking is optional for all three trims.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The standard infotainment system in the ’25 GR86 has Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, an 8-inch color touchscreen, and a high-quality sound system. While the base trim has six speakers, the GR86 Premium and GR86 Hakone Edition add another pair of speakers and an amplifier. Every trim is set up for Wi-Fi hotspot access and Toyota connected services (Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect with a 1-year trial subscription).
