2023 Toyota GR86 in red and white

Overview

The Toyota GR86 is truly a one-of-a-kind performance vehicle. With its lightweight and balanced handling, the GR86 will have you looking for excuses to go for a spin. Its prestige is no joke, as it was designed and tested by the famous Toyota Gazoo Racing team and competed in some prominent races, including the World Rally Championship, World Endurance Championship, Nürburgring 24h, and Dakar Rally. For the 2023 model year, a 10th Anniversary Special Edition model is on the docket, although it won’t be available until the fall of 2022. When it does arrive, it’s sure to make an impression with its exclusive Solar Shift orange paint, cat-back performance exhaust, and matte-black 18-inch wheels. What’s more, everyone who buys a 2023 GR86 will get a complimentary one-year National Auto Sport Association (NASA) membership that provides one free High-Performance Driving Experience (HPDE) with a NASA professional.

Trims and Powertrain

The 2023 Toyota GR86 is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car made in two trims: the Base and Premium. Their 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces a satisfying amount for this vehicle class: 228 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, though a six-speed automatic is available. With the manual stick, the ’23 GR86 achieves a zero-to-60 time of 6.1 seconds. With the automatic, that number increases ever so slightly to 6.6 sec.

Highlighted Features

On top of its impressive handling, the ’23 GR86 will please buyers with its standard amenities. The base trim’s exterior presents auto-leveling LED headlights, heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, and remote keyless entry, but it’s the performance attributes that its potential drivers are most interested in. Those include 17-inch wheels with Michelin Primacy HP summer tires, a Torsen limited-slip differential, a multi-link rear suspension with a mounted stabilizer bar, and GR circuit-tuned coil springs and shock absorbers. This trim also shows off a black mesh grille, GR86 badges, and a dual chrome-tipped exhaust. Meanwhile, the base’s silver-accented and driver-centric interior has push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a couple of USB charging ports, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster with performance instrumentation, a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel and shift knob, a fixed center console with two front cupholders, and sport front bucket seats with black side bolsters and fabric inserts.

The Premium adds an adaptive front lighting system, a color-keyed rear duckbill spoiler, 18-inch matte-black wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires, illuminated vanity mirrors, a fixed center console with one open cupholder and two hidden cupholders, aluminum sport pedals, and heated front sport seats with synthetic-leather bolsters and faux-suede inserts.

Driver-Assist Features

All 2023 GR86s have a backup camera that displays the vehicle’s projected path on the screen. Toyota also installs some active driver aids in conjunction with the automatic transmission. This bundle, called the GR86 Active Safety Suite, contains a pre-collision braking system, pre-collision throttle management, lead vehicle start alert, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams. Rear parking sensors and reverse automatic braking come standard as well, but the Premium alone gets blind-spot detection.

Multimedia and Connectivity

Despite being a performance-focused coupe, the ‘23 GR86 packs in a modern infotainment setup that’s complete with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system. The Premium gets all of the above plus a more powerful six-speaker sound system with an amplifier.
