Overview

A plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) has high appeal in the minds of many motorists. All-electric driving is ideal for shorter spans, while the combustion engine can ensure worry-free travel for longer distances. That’s the idea behind the 2022 RAV4 Prime PHEV. It’s a compact crossover that combines Toyota’s proven hybrid technology with electric power. One of the most surprising benefits of this powertrain is its swift acceleration. With a 0-to-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds, the RAV4 Prime is the fastest four-door Toyota you can buy.
Besides an engaging driving experience, the RAV4 Prime embodies all the characteristics of an award-winning crossover. Its ample cabin offers comfortable accommodations for five or – with the back seat folded flat – up to 69.8 cubic feet of cargo space. The RAV4 Prime’s versatility extends to a maximum towing capacity of 2,500 pounds. This overview looks at the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid; the conventional RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid are covered separately.

Trims and Specifications

Toyota offers the RAV4 Prime in an uncomplicated pair of trims, SE and XSE, both of which come standard with electronic on-demand all-wheel drive. Their gas-electric powerplant is made up of a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine and two electric motors (one motor per axle); there are separate modes for Normal, Sport, Eco, EV, HV, Auto EV/HV, and charging. The combined output for the system is 302 horsepower, which is managed by a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with sequential shift mode..

In all-electric mode, the RAV4 Prime can travel up to 42 miles and has a 94 MPGe rating. As a standard hybrid switching between modes as the drive dictates, this Toyota is EPA-rated for 36 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. Based on a 14.5-gallon gas tank, maximum fuel economy, and peak all-electric range, the RAV4 Prime can travel more than 600 miles without refueling or recharging.

Standard Features and Options

Starting off the RAV4 Prime lineup is the SE, which has Bi-LED projector-style headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, a power tailgate, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Fabric seats with red accents, a 7-inch driver information display, power heated side mirrors with integrated turn-signal indicators, and 18-inch alloy wheels are also among the SE’s other standard equipment. The optional Prime SE Weather and Moonroof Package adds a power moonroof, a heated leather-trimmed steering wheel, rear outboard heated seats, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Buyers can choose a more upscale RAV4 Prime with the XSE to get a power moonroof, unique LED exterior lighting, SofTex-trimmed seats, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, 19-inch alloy wheels, wireless device charging, and blue ambient interior lighting. Toyota offers several available option groupings for the XSE. The Weather Package supplies a heated leather-trimmed steering wheel and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Premium Package upgrades the trim substantially with a panoramic glass roof with a power moonroof, a color head-up display, a surround-view monitor, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat with memory, and a four-way power front passenger seat. This grouping includes front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, a foot-activated power liftgate, expanded proximity keyless entry, and a digital rearview mirror.

Driver Safety Technology

Both the SE and XSE have Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (collision mitigation braking with pedestrian detection, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control, road sign assist, and automatic high beams). Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is another standard safety feature, as are eight airbags, anti-lock brakes, and vehicle stability control.

Infotainment and Connectivity

An 8-inch touchscreen is the centerpiece of the RAV4 Prime SE’s infotainment system (the XSE gets a 9-inch display). Both trims have a six-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The system also provides access to Toyota Connected Services and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Those who order the XSE can enhance the infotainment experience by adding navigation paired with an 11-speaker JBL sound system.
