Overview
The Toyota Prius has long been the “face” of the gas-electric hybrid segment. It first hit American roads a little more than two decades ago, and in that time it has led the way in helping cars have less impact on the environment. For the 2022 model year, the Prius is back with a sharply styled exterior and Toyota’s tried-and-true hybrid system under the hood. This year also sees the introduction of the Nightshade Special Edition, giving eco-conscious drivers an on-trend, blacked-out appearance option.
But the trait that goes hand-in-hand with the Prius’s unique looks is its practicality. Not only is it exceptional with its fuel economy, but the five-seat Prius offers hatchback convenience for easy cargo loading. Better still, the Prius is the only non-crossover hybrid you can buy with available all-wheel drive (on select trims). On top of the regular warranty, Toyota backs the Prius with 8 years/100,000 miles of protection for the hybrid powertrain and 10 years/150,000 miles of coverage for the hybrid battery. There’s also 24 months/25,000 miles of maintenance and roadside assistance services.

Trims and Mechanical Specs
The Toyota Prius is sold in five trims: L Eco, LE, XLE, Nightshade Special Edition, and Limited. Their 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine pairs with an electric motor to make 121 horsepower; those that are equipped with AWD have a second motor (5 kW). The gear ratios are managed by a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard on all trims, but AWD is available on the LE, XLE, and Nightshade trims.
The L Eco trim has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 58 mpg around town and 52 mpg on the highway. That changes to 54 city/50 highway for the other Prius trims with FWD and 51 city/47 highway for an AWD-equipped Prius. Standard Equipment and Options
Some of the L Eco’s noteworthy standard features are 15-inch alloy wheels with covers, LED projector headlights with auto-off, heated power side mirrors, keyless entry (driver’s door only), push-button start, a 4.2-inch driver information display, automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, fabric upholstery, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, and a package of driver aid technologies (see below for more information). The LE adds a rear intermittent wiper and a cargo area cover.
The XLE gets 17-inch alloy wheels (15-inch alloys come with the AWD drivetrain), auto-on headlights, multi-door keyless entry, rain-sensing windshield wipers, leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The optional Advanced Technology Package will add a color head-up display and an adaptive front lighting system. The optional Premium Convenience Package (power moonroof and unique alloy wheels) can be added to FWD versions of the XLE. The Nightshade Special Edition duplicates the standard features of the XLE but blacks out the wheels and exterior trim. The Limited gets the contents of the XLE with the Advanced Technology Package along with some infotainment upgrades (see the last section for details). The Premium Convenience Package mentioned previously is also offered for the Limited.
Safety and Technology
All Prius trims get the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite with a pre-collision system and pedestrian detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. Starting at the LE level, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and an automatic parking system are also standard.
The Prius includes a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with a six-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, a 12-volt accessory outlet, and access to Toyota’s telematics system for emergency help. The XLE gets wireless device charging. The Limited receives an 11.6-inch touchscreen (although it’s not compatible with Android Auto), navigation, and a primo JBL audio system with 10 speakers.
