Trims and Mechanical Specs
The 2022 Toyota Corolla comes in eight different trims: L, LE, XLE, SE, SE Nightshade Edition, SE Apex Edition, XSE, and XSE Apex Edition. A 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine (139 horsepower) powers the L, LE, and XLE, while the higher trims get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder (169 horsepower). All Corollas are front-wheel drive and controlled by a continuously variable transmission (CVT). However, a six-speed manual is available with the SE and SE Apex.
The L, LE, SE Apex (with CVT), and XSE Apex have an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 30 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. The XLE is rated for 29 city/37 highway. The SE (with CVT) and SE Nightshade are rated for 31 city/40 highway, while the SE with the manual transmission is rated for 29 city/36 highway. The SE Apex with the manual carries an EPA estimate of 28 city/35 highway. The XSE is rated for 31 city/38 highway.
Standard and Optional Features
The Corolla L comes with 15-inch wheels, all-LED exterior lighting, power-adjustable outside mirrors, manual climate control, a 4.2-inch driver information display, and a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat. The LE adds 16-inch steel wheels, heated side mirrors, keyless entry, automatic climate control, upgraded fabric upholstery, and a rear center armrest. The available LE Convenience Package adds 16-inch alloy wheels and a proximity key with push-button start. The Optional LE Premium Package furnishes those features along with a power moonroof.
The XLE starts with equipment of the LE with the Premium Package and adds upgraded LED headlights, outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, and heated front seats. The available XLE Connectivity Package can be added for wireless charging, an upgraded sound system, and navigation. The optional XLE Advanced Lighting Package includes adaptive front lighting and ambient interior lighting.
The sporty SE trim steps back to the same list of standard equipment as the LE but adds 18-inch alloy wheels, unique exterior accents, normal/sport driving modes, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters (CVT only), sport front seats, and a proximity key with push-button start (for the manual transmission only). The available SE Premium Package adds the proximity key with push-button start (CVT) and a power moonroof. The SE Nightshade Edition receives all SE equipment plus 18-inch black-painted alloys, a black sport mesh grille, and black exterior accents.
The performance-oriented SE Apex Edition updates the SE to include a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch black aluminum wheels, a sport-tuned exhaust, bronze/black exterior accents with coordinating front and rear spoilers, unique badging, and bronze interior accent stitching. The Corolla XSE includes the features from the SE and adds a power moonroof, unique gray metallic exterior accents with a matching rear spoiler, simulated leather seating with sport fabric inserts, heated front seats, and a 7-inch driver information display. The available XSE Advanced Lighting Package will add adaptive front lighting and ambient interior lighting. The XSE Apex Edition blends the performance and appearance features of the SE Apex with the upgraded equipment of the XSE.
Safety and Technology
All Corollas include the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of advanced driver aids, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert is standard on the XLE, XSE, and XSE Apex (this feature is included in the LE Convenience, LE Premium, and SE Premium Packages).
The base infotainment system in the L has a 7-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, one USB charge port, one USB media port, and access to Toyota’s telematics system for emergency help. The LE and higher trims upgrade to an 8-inch touchscreen. Toyota offers some optional packages for trim-specific infotainment upgrades. The XLE Connectivity Package includes a nine-speaker JBL sound system, navigation, and wireless device charging (the same package is available for the XSE). There are also two SE Connectivity Package options, one with an Audio Plus multimedia upgrade and another that adds the JBL audio system.
