Overview

The subcompact Toyota Yaris sedan, previously known as the Yaris iA, offers exceptional fuel economy (up to 40 mpg highway) and state-of-the-art active safety equipment at an excellent price point. It returns for the 2019 model year with an updated look and some equipment upgrades; there’s also a Yaris Liftback available. The direct-injection 1.5-liter engine is paired with either the base manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission (with Normal and Sport driving mode selector on the top-level trim). Every Yaris comes with the ToyotaCare maintenance plan, for 2 years/25,000 miles of coverage for routine scheduled maintenance and 24/7 roadside assistance.

The L, LE, and XLE trims offer different packages of standard equipment. The base L is outfitted nicely for an entry-level subcompact, and the LE and XLE come with fog lights, a rear trunk-lid spoiler, Smart Key technology, and heated side mirrors. The XLE features automatic rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic on/off LED headlights, auto climate control, leatherette seating with blue contrast stitching, and other upscale accents for the interior. On all Yaris models, the back seat splits 60/40 and folds down to accommodate cargo that’s too big for the trunk.

Technology

The Smart Key system comes standard on the LE and XLE trims to allow keyless access and push-button start. An infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen has Bluetooth and voice recognition capability, SiriusXM Satellite Radio (with a free three-month trial), and six speakers. It’s set up to receive the Integrated Navigation system, and there’s also a pair of USB ports.

On the safety side of technology, the ’19 Yaris has quite a few features designed to protect its occupants. Six airbags and a backup camera are standard, along with a low-speed pre-collision mitigation system that alerts the driver to a potential forward crash and automatically engages the brakes if needed. Various traction, stability, and braking assistance technologies are included in Toyota’s Active Safety System suite. The top two trims have heated exterior mirrors with built-in LED signal indicator lamps.
