2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime for Sale in Smithfield, RI
The 2021 RAV4 Prime is not just Toyota’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, it’s also the highest-powered and quickest (thanks to that electric torque) RAV4 ever. As with all plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEVs), it uses up its battery power first and then switches to the gasoline engine, rather than continuously switching back and forth like a conventional gas-electric hybrid. The RAV4 Prime is plenty exciting, with its 302 total system horsepower and exceptional torque: it goes from 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds, making it one zippy SUV. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a drive mode dial with settings for Normal, Sport, Eco, Trail, Auto EV/HV, and HV/EV charge hold. It has an 8-inch ground clearance (8.2 inches for the higher trim), too, perfect for if you’re planning to take it off-road.
Trims and Powertrain
There are two trim levels for the RAV4 Prime: SE and XSE. Their hybrid powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter dynamic force four-cylinder gasoline engine and three hybrid electric motors. This setup produces a total system output of 302 hp and 165 lb.-ft. of torque. The gear ratios are managed by an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (e-CVT). All-wheel drive is standard, and there’s a drive mode selector with SPORT, ECO, and NORMAL settings
The ’21 RAV4 Prime’s 18.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack allows for up to 42 miles of all-electric driving before the combustion engine takes over. The 3.3 kW charger can charge the battery in 12 hours at 120 volts and 4.5 hours at 240 volts. The XSE is eligible for the available 6.6 kW charger, which can charge the battery in as little as 2.5 hours. Based on EPA listings, the RAV4 Prime gets 94 MPGe (miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent) and 40 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway in hybrid mode. Its maximum towing capacity is 2,500 pounds.
