Trim Levels, Powertrain, and Performance

The 2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime is a leader in the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) crossover segment. Both of its trims (SE and XSE) have a powertrain that unites a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with twin electric motors that combine to produce 302 hp and 165 lb.-ft. of torque. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) and standard all-wheel drivetrain complete the main mechanical picture. The RAV4 Prime’s 8.2 inches of ground clearance enhances its versatility for light off-road travel. It also has the strength to tow up to 2,500 lb.

When it’s operating solely on electricity, the ’24 RAV4 Prime will provide an EPA-estimated 42 miles of range before switching to regular hybrid operation with the gas engine and motors sharing duties. Its total fuel economy rating is 94 MPGe, or 40 mpg around town and 36 mpg on the highway.

Notable Amenities

The SE is a well-appointed base trim with excellent features such as heated front seats, Smart Key (proximity keyless entry), dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, push-button start, red interior accents, two 12V power outlets (in the front instrument panel and cargo area), five USB ports (three up front and two in the back), a 60/40-split fold-flat rear seatback with a center armrest and cup holders, and a cargo-area tonneau cover. It also receives low-profile black roof rails, a power liftgate with height adjustability, a dual chrome-tipped exhaust, heated side mirrors with blind-spot warning and turn-signal indicators, and a range of selectable drive modes: Normal, HV, EV, Auto EV/HV, Trail, and Charge. It can also be upgraded with the optional Weather & Moonroof Package, which contains a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated rear outboard seats, rain-sensing wipers, a windshield wiper de-icer, and a moonroof.

The moonroof becomes standard in the XSE, along with SofTex upholstery, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless phone charging, blue ambient interior lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, red-painted shock absorbers, vertical LED accent lights, and black power-folding heated side mirrors (also with blind-spot warning and turn-signal indicators). This trim can be loaded further with the Weather Package (heated steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, and a wiper de-icer) and the Premium Package, which will supply a 10-inch color head-up display, a 6.6 kW onboard charger, heated and ventilated front seats, a power passenger’s seat, heated rear outboard seats, a panoramic glass roof, a digital rearview mirror with HomeLink, a 120V cargo-area power outlet, a hands-free liftgate, and additional safety features (more on those below).

Advanced Safety Tech

Both trims of the ’24 RAV4 Prime are appointed with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite of advanced driving aids, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist, road sign recognition, and full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control. While it’s not officially grouped within the TSS 2.5+ suite, the RAV4 Prime also gets blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. When the XSE is equipped with the optional Premium Package, it will also get front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking and a surround-view camera.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Toyota installs a well-rounded multimedia system in every RAV4 Prime, with standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and free trials to various connected services. The difference is that the SE has an 8-inch touchscreen with a simple six-speaker sound system, while the XSE upgrades to a 10.5-inch screen with a premium 11-speaker JBL audio setup.
