The fifth-generation Toyota RAV4 is coming to dealers for the 2019 model year with a special-edition TRD Off-Road version. This highly anticipated trail blazer comes with a healthy dose of Toyota Racing Development engineering and design features that provide greater off-road capabilities and rugged, head-turning style. The TRD Off-Road’s powertrain consists of a 203 horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It has a drive mode selector with settings for Normal, Sport, and Eco, and if some extra equipment is required for getaways, this most capable RAV4 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Leave the Asphalt Behind

Various technologies and reinforcements make the TRD Off-Road ready for the dusty trails, mud, snow, and other challenging terrain. It boasts Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive, which can direct up to 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels and distribute it to the left or right rear wheels as needed for optimal handling. The driver can see the torque allocations and slip control data directly via the Multi-Information Display. Whenever its AWD capabilities aren’t required, the Rear Driveline Disconnect system will kick in to kick up the fuel efficiency. What’s more, a standard multi-terrain select system affords drivers the opportunity to maximize traction by matching the drive mode to particular conditions: Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, and Snow. The TRD Off-Road’s short front and rear overhangs enhance trail-driving capabilities, while Hill Start Control, Trailer Sway Control, and Downhill Assist Control increase its performance and safety factor.

Embracing the TRD Heritage

The TRD Off-Road takes inspiration from Toyota’s renowned off-road racing history. You’ll notice its high-rise roof rails, larger fenders, lightweight alloy wheels, and Falken off-road tires. Its suspension is engineered to strengthen body control and isolate small bumps to help smoothe out trails and rough pavement. Its coil springs are tuned for heavier off-roading, and its twin-tube shocks feature all-new internal rebound springs to improve control. With the new bump stops, compression direction wheel travel and body control are both enhanced, which you’ll notice when you drive over large dips. Inside, you’ll find TRD-specific red stitching and red trim accents. The seats are covered with premium SofTex, which is lighter and more durable than leather, and the front seat headrests are stitched with the TRD logo.

Safety Features

Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.0), which comes standard on all RAV4 models, can also be found with the TRD Off-Road version. This excellent driver-assist suite includes pre-collision alert with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. Unlike the other trims, the TRD Off-Road gets a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, as well as rear cross-traffic braking.
