Mechanical Features and Fuel Economy

The ’20 Corolla is available in five trim levels: L, LE, SE, XLE, and XSE. The L, LE, and XLE trims are equipped with a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated 139 horsepower four-cylinder engine paired to a continuously variable transmission with front-wheel drive. The SE and XLE trims get a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated 169 hp engine coupled to a specialized CVT with paddle shifters. The base engine delivers an EPA-estimated 29 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, while the 2.0-liter gets an impressive EPA-rated 31 mpg city/40 mpg highway.

Trim-Specific Features

The base L trim comes standard with 15-inch wheels, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, 60/40-split folding rear seats, modern safety features, and great connectivity features such as Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth. The LE upgrades to 16-inch wheels and adds heated mirrors, automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, and some other convenience features. The SE receives some sporty upgrades such as 18-inch alloy wheels, sport-themed exterior features and front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and improved headlights. The XLE comes standard with SofTex simulated-leather upholstery, heated front seats, an upgraded instrument panel, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and some additional advanced safety features. The XSE trim gets a blend of the XLE’s standard equipment and the sporty elements of the SE.

Safety and Technology

To keep up with the ever-changing demands of the modern consumer, all Corolla trims are equipped with some outstanding infotainment features, such as a 7-inch touchscreen, a USB port, Bluetooth audio streaming, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and a six-speaker audio system. The LE simply adds another USB port, but the XLE upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen and satellite radio. There is also an available technology package (on all trims above LE) that includes a JBL premium sound system with nine speakers, a navigation system, and a wireless charging pad.

The ’20 Corolla was designed with safety as a top priority. Even the base trim comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Connect emergency communications, a rearview camera, and the well-regarded Toyota Safety Sense package of active safety technologies (pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and low-light pedestrian detection and daytime cyclist detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, road edge detection with sway warning system, automatic high beams, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking). This suite adds even more features on higher trims. Passive safety features found on all Corolla trims include an advanced eight airbag system, high-tensile-strength steel body panels, and front and rear energy-absorbing crumple zones with side-impact door beams.
