2020 Toyota 4Runner SUV in Rhode Island

The Toyota 4Runner is one of Toyota’s most iconic vehicles—a sleek and stylish midsized SUV with a reputation for its off-road capabilities, outstanding reliability, and long engine life. Toyota seems to have more or less perfected the 4Runner, as it has not seen a full redesign since 2010, yet it remains timeless and popular. The 4Runner’s features, though, are thoroughly modern, with more safety and connectivity technology added each model year. For 2020, that means some new and updated multimedia features that create a more user-friendly experience, plus an expansive suite of active safety features that are now included on all trim levels. Its many satisfied drivers also love its comfortable interior and ample cargo space.

Mechanical Features

All 4Runner models are equipped with a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine with a five-speed automatic transmission. Toyota also offers two different 4-wheel drive systems: part-time 4WD with Active Traction Control and a full-time 4WD system with A-Trac and a Torsen limited-slip center differential with locking feature. For trail-driving enthusiasts, the 4Runner also has four selectable drive modes designed to increase traction on difficult terrain.

The 4Runner can tow up to 5,000 lb., which is plenty for a pair of snowmobiles or a small boat or camper. As far as fuel economy, the two-wheel drive versions get an EPA-estimated 17 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, while the 4WD models dip just slightly to 20 mpg highway (the 17 mpg around town stays the same). It also has a 23-gallon fuel tank, meaning that it’s capable of going approximately 483 miles before the next fuel stop.

Multimedia Features & Safety

The 4Runner has really stepped up the multimedia experience for 2020. Even the base SR5 comes standard with the features everybody wants these days, such as an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, two USB charging ports, hands-free phone capabilities, advanced voice recognition and music streaming via Bluetooth wireless technology, and a 3-month All Access trial to Sirius XM. The Premium trims upgrade to a deluxe audio system with integrated dynamic navigation and eight speakers, Dynamic POI Search, and voice recognition.

New for 2020, all grades of the 4Runner come standard with Toyota Safety Sense, a proprietary suite of active safety and driver-assist features designed to create a safer and less stressful driving experience. Toyota Safety Sense consists of a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with a sway warning system, automatic high beams, and adaptive radar cruise control. The 4Runner also provides excellent occupant protection through its passive safety features: an advanced driver and passenger airbag system, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, crumple zones, and side-impact door beams.
