New Toyota 2019 86 for Sale in Smithfield, RI
Toyota’s legendary AE86 Hachi-Roku Corolla has a bit of redundancy in its name, since the Japanese hachi-roku translates to “8-6.” The revered race car has spawned a present-day rear-wheel-drive coupe by that name. The Toyota 86 was previously incarnated as the Scion F, but it reverted to the 86 name for the 2017 model year. It’s back for its third model year to the delight of drivers looking for a fun, lively, and fine-handling two-door. This is by all means a fun little machine for someone who enjoys spirited driving and doesn’t need a spacious family car or significant cargo capacity.
Standard Equipment and Trim Levels
The 2019 Toyota 86 comes in three trim levels: the base 86, the GT, and the extremely limited-production (only about 1,400 units) TRD Special Edition. Standard features on all trims include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an audio/communication system with USB port and 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, heated exterior mirrors, chrome-tipped exhaust, LED headlights and daytime running lights, and the Star Safety System traction and stability control. Moving up to the GT trim will get you heated front leather-and-Granlux sport seats with bolsters, other Granlux interior accents (door panels, for example), dual-zone auto climate control, the Smart Key system, and fog lights. The GT also boasts sporty details such as an analog tachometer with programmable rev indicator and a rear spoiler.
A very small number of TRD Special Edition models will be built, and they’ll all have the same configuration: a manual transmission, Raven black paint, and black interior with fabric upholstery on the bolstered racing seats, contrasting red seat edges and stitching, a black-and-red steering wheel, red seat belts, and red, yellow, and orange TRD badging inside and out. There are also unique TRD exterior stripe graphics in red, yellow, and orange. This special trim will also have Sachs dampers, Brembo brakes, stabilizer bars both front and rear, sport-tuned multi-link rear suspension side underbody spoilers, and aluminum pedals. The exhaust system is also upgraded to a sport-enhanced version.
This is a zippy and nimble, yet not overpowered, coupe. The base and GT trims are available in either a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management; the TRD Special Edition only comes in the stick shift. A 205 horsepower 2.0-liter flat-four engine powers the manual transmission versions of the 2019 86; models equipped with the automatic transmission drop 5 horses to 200. The aluminum hood and plastic-resin fuel tank help to reduce the car’s overall weight, while the Boxer engine sits low to keep the center of gravity close to the road.
